The first Christian churches were modelled of the basilicas of the Romans because they were public buildings, and therefore they could accommodate large crowds. The Christians used the plan of the basilica palatina (palace basilica). This was designed by the men of the governing elite when they stopped appearing at the forum and started to address audiences in these basilicas which were part of their palaces. The Christians used this plan to accommodate the altar and have a place where the priest delivered the sermons.

This is the origin of the rectangular shape of churches and of the apse, the semi-circular or polygonal recess with a semi-dome as roof at the far end of the entrance. The apse was modelled on the exedra of the Roman basilica palatina. The exedra had the tribuna (a seat on a raised floor where the important men addressed the audience or the magistrate heard cases). The Christians replaced the tribuna with the the altar.

The first Christian churches were called basilicas. In Italian some churches are still called basilicas, including very first churches, such as St Peter's, St John's Lateran, St Mary Major, and St Paul's Outside the Walls

Emperor Constantine ordered some churches to be built with a transept, a section that lied across the main building and protrudes on both sides, giving ta cruciform (cross- shaped) building.

If you choose to worship alone in your home is this okay?

Sure, why shouldn't it be? One of the freedoms this country was founded on was freedom of religion, and all that implies. Worship a tree if you wish, worship in the shower, worship at the zoo, or don't worship if you don't feel like it. Worship the God of the Christians, the gods of other religions, your own god, or the Force, or nothing. But do act according to your conscience and don't be ashamed of who you are. God bless!

Why do people choose not to go to church on Sundays?

OpinionFor some, it is a matter of limited time and too many priorites, but they feel they are still Christians even if they do not give time to religious observance. For others, their faith is not so strong that they feel obliged to make any commitment of their time to religious observance. Others do not really hold religious views at all, and are merely nominal Christians or feel that it is more 'respectable' to profess to be Christians even when this is not really true.AnswerSome Christians do not attend church on Sundays because they choose Saturday as the day to worship. Others do not attend a formal church but observe a time of worship in their own home. This may be due to distance from a suitable church, or inability to find a church that fits their beliefs.

Why is worship important to christians?

Worship is important to Christians because they see it as a time in which they can proclaim the goodness of God and, most commonly, sing about their thankfulness to God for their salvation, their joy at being in God's family and tell God how they are feeling; discouraged, sad, stressed, happy. Worship is also seen as a way of giving something back to God for all that he has given us. It is like a gift that we can choose to give God.
