Why did Columbus bring a priest with him?

Christopher Columbus brought a priest over to the Caribbean from Spain, so that way when he claimed the land, the priest could bless the land. Supposedly, non-blessed land was dangerous such as Demons, and evil spirits. The Evil spirits were to have caused famine, death, disease, poverty and also the collapse of any colony that settles there.
