The riches of the Aztec empire led other Spanish conquerors to seek their fortunes in south America.
1519
Not really. Arawak people from Cuba informed Cortes and his men that a "wealthy country rich with gold" would be located southwest of Cuba. Being a greedy conquistador in search for gold, Cortes began to search for Mexico and its riches by early 1518.
Mexico
Hernando Cortes "discovered" Tenochtitlan , which was the capital of the Aztec empire. Also he followed the foot steps of Columbus from Spain to Mexico and the Carribean islands. And he conquered the Aztecs. He became mayor of Santiago de Cuba. From the emperor of the Aztecs he got jewels and gold.

Hernán Cortés (1485-1547) encountered the Aztecs in 1519, and although the Spanish were initially treated as "gods" by the natives, they soon had to militarily defeat them. By August, 1521, after losing hundreds of men and needing reinforcements from Cuba, Cortes completed the conquest of the Aztecs empire and ruled Mexico until 1524.
He didn't discover Mexico himself, but the reason he went there was to conquer the Aztecs as he did successfully.
The Aztec civilization, Cuba, and Mexico
Cortes never took over Cuba. In 1511 he joined an expedition to Cuba and became mayor of the province of Santiago, the governor of Cuba sent him off on an expedition to Mexico. He never returned to Cuba.
