Ephesus was a central point for the godess Artemis/Diana. The silversmiths made a living selling images of the godess. Paul was attempting to promote another sky god of the Jews, Yahweh (Jehovah) (and his teacher Yeshua (Jesus)), as the dominant god above all others.

The inroads Paul made damaged the trade of the silversmiths, and their representative Demetrios led a protested against this erosion of their livelihood, encouraging the people of the city to demonstrate in their monthly political assembly to support them.

There was no fight. Their political system did not allow them to introduce motions, just to vote on them, so they sat in the assembly all day chanting 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians' to get their message across. Eventually, their chief magistrate told them that they had done their best and to go home, as the Roman goveror of the province had become uneasy at what might become a rebellion and send soldiers to break the demonstration up, and advised them to go home. They did.
