ancient Egypt did not actually rely on King Tutankhamen. He reigned from the age of 9-18, which is too young to actually hold the throne. As a result, Ancient Egypt was ruled by regents, who are adult advisers who rule in the name of the child who is too young to do so. While he was alive, therefore, Tutankhamen was a figurehead, and nothing more.

The only reason why Tutankhamen is so well known is that his tomb in the Valley of the Kings was the first to have eluded grave robbers for millenia. When Howard Carter discovered his tomb in 1922, it was filled with amazing artifacts that shed an incredible amount of light on Ancient Egypt, especially in the New Kingdom Period.
