Benjamin "Pap" Singleton wanted a better life for himself and his fellow freedmen.
He encouraged freedmen to migrate to Kansas where they could enjoy their civil rights.
In Kansas they would face less discrimination, especially legal discrimination, than they had in the South.
There was also economic opportunity in the '''Homestead Act''', which gave away 160 acres of government land in the West to anyone who promised to live on it and improve it for 5 years.
