According to tradition, the original system of worship was that the firstborn in each family served as priest (among the Israelites, "kohen") for that family. Being the eldest, he was expected to bridge between the patriarch and the following generation(s), handing down the traditions.

After the Israelites failed to stop the worship of the Golden Calf (Exodus ch.32), God chose the Levites, a scholarly tribe, instead of the firstborn. Because the firstborn should in principle have remained as servants of God, it was commanded that the firstborn be symbolically redeemed from their obligation by giving a set amount of silver to a kohen (the Kohens are one of the Levite families). Numbers ch.3, and Rashi commentary on 3:12.

How many generations might come together at a family reunion?

If you assume that each generation had a child at the age of 18 and the eldest was 90 years old, then there would be 6 generations at the reunion. This can be greater if the eldest is older than 90 and each generation had a child earlier than 18. For example there would be 7 generations at the reunion if the eldest was still 90 and each generation had a child at 15 years of age.
