First performed in 1747 against the political backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion two years earlier, Judas Maccabeus is an Oratorio by Handel. The libretto (storyline) is based in 1 Maccabees 2-8, a book of the Apocrypha (the partial bridge between the Old and New Testaments). In an attempt to suppress Judaism the festival of lights banned by Antiochus, governor of occupied Judea, was Hanukkah.
