Henry Ford wanted to make cars more affordable to the American family. Up until he perfected the assembly line, a single car took on average 12 hours and 30 minutes to make and cost around $1,000 (over $23,000 by today's standards). After the assembly line was made, it only took 1 hour and 30 minutes to make a car that would only cost $200 (Under $5,000 today). The process was so fast, Ford Company was making on average 1,000 cars a day.
The cost of the average car in the early 1900s was so expensive that only the rich could own a car. Each car was hand built and was so complex that the owner needed his own mechanic to keep it running. The Ford Model T on the other hand was simple and easy to repair. The 1908 Ford was not much cheaper at $850 but by the 1920s the price had fallen to $290. A price that almost any consumer could afford.
He wanted to create a car that was simple to operate, easy to repair, cheap to buy, and would go anywhere. His ultimate goal was to make a profit and he succeeded as he sold over 15 million Ford Model Ts.
