Also, in 1534 (or around that date), Henry VIII broke away from the Church, making himself Head of the Church in England. Since most of the lower clergy and monks disagreed with this idea, Henry III plundered and closed many monasteries and churches. In fact, Elizabeth I plundered the monasteries to a greater extent than Henry III. I can't remember which one would send men to 'examine' monasteries and say that they are 'impure' and close them. And then, they would take the goods out of those monasteries.
