It was Henry VIII that created a new church. He broke from the Catholic Church and renounced his loyalty to the Pope because he wanted to be able to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon [as she could not produce a male heir, and he was supposedly truly in love with Anne Boleyn] and the Church did not allow for 'divorce' if the marriage had been consummated. Basically, Henry's plan was to proclaim all loyalty to the crown, so he could make his own rules. His new Church of England allowed for divorce so he was able to separate from Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn.

When Henry VIII came to the throne, he was a devout Catholic and defended the Church against them. Henry VIII did not agree with their views. When the Pope refused to grant Henry VIII an annulment from Catherine of Aragon, Henry split the English Church from the Roman church. Rather than the pope, the king would be the spiritual head of the English church. Reformest elements in the English Church at that time gave him support.King Henry VIII declared himself supreme head of a new Church of England. (The Act of Supremacy).
