The reason Mark Twain wrote this classic novel is because he understood the problems the racial prejudice and slavery was causing in the world, and he aimed to change it using events and adventures that happened to him as a child. Therefore he wrote the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Huck dives into the water to escape from his abusive father and the oppressive conditions that he faces at home. It symbolizes his desire for freedom and independence, as well as his willingness to take risks in order to evade danger.
He ran away because his father was an abusive alcoholic, who finally got to the point where Huck's life was in danger. Huck's mother is not mentioned in the book, a genteel way of hinting she died in childbirth. Since there were no social services back then, the only thing that could be done was escape- and since he had no money, it would have to be downstream. To prevent anyone from coming after him, he faked his own death. His father was not interested in Huck as such, he simply wanted Huck's $6,000 dollars. to keep him from getting it, Huck "sold" his $6,000 for one dollar, to the Judge, who clearly understood what was going on, as Pap Finn sued to get the money anyway. With Pap Finn gone, Huck could get his money back. Neither of Twain's two lesser known Tom Sawyer sequels mention it- but clearly Huck returned home instead of staying with the Phelps family.
Samuel Clemens loved cigars. he once said "I smoke in moderation, Only one cigar at a time." He was said to have had a cigar in his hand from day light to dawn. He even smoked in bed!
