Prior to WW2, England had several colonies in Africa. They wanted to maintain security of the Suez Canal. After Italy gained control of the disputed countries in the Eastern edge of Africa, they began to attack British colonies.
Africa is the continent south of Italy and Greece.
At the time, Italy was thought by some to be the best route of attack to Germany, but in retrospect the war was lengthened and resources wasted by this strategy. With North Africa and the Mediterranean in Allied hands, Italy was effectively contained. Any advantages reaped by the Italian Campaign were greatly outweighed by the losses which the Allies incurred.

the Germans were getting their supplies through the Suez canal and a lot of their oil from north Africa the allies wanted to cut these supply lines. also use it to attack Italy which would eventually create a 3 front war for the Germans one in Italy, after Operations Overlord and Neptune a front in France then the Russian front therefore boxing them in

In 1941 there were no foreign troops in Italy. However, there was fighting between Italy and Britain in Greece, North Africa, in Ethiopia and at sea. (Battle of Matapan, for example, in March 1941). 1941 also saw the first air raids by the RAF (British Air Force) on Italy. On 11th November, a British carrier force struck the Italian fleet anchored in Taranto harbor on the southern end of Italy. This aerial attack pre-dated the attack of Pearl Harbor by 13 months.
