Polk was a Southerner and an expansionist. He believed in the right to run the country from sea to sea. I am not so sure he wanted to expand slavery. I think he may have had some household slaves, but was not a big slave-owner.
He was from the same state as Jackson and admired him as did most of the people in TN. Jackson liked him and did what he could to help Polk further is political career.

I doubt that he gave it to himself. He was a supporter of Andrew Jackson and Jackson was called "Old Hickory" . Polk was much younger. Both men were from Tennessee and both were leaders in Tennessee politics.
Other way around. Jackson came first, and James K. Polk dedicated his administration to finishing the work that Andrew Jackson had started.
