Although born in Kentucky (a border state), he had been running a plantation in Mississippi for years, and had become deeply absorbed in feudal culture.

Possibly his strongest point was that he was a man of principle who stood up for his beliefs, and he was selected as the Southern President because he embodied the best traditions of the landowner-aristocrat. He actually treated his slaves so well that they didn't want their freedom.
