Did Jesus set out to start a new religion?

No. Jesus saw himself in the prophecies and archetypes of the Old Testament. He came to fulfill the law and free the people from the "curse" of estrangement from God. This never was a new religion, and the early Christians certainly did not consider it a new religion. Christianity was called, "The Way" and was ultimately believed to be completion of the Jewish scriptures and religion. However, the Jewish leaders who did not follow "The Way" felt it was a blasphemous cult and tried to kill or imprison all the members. They also used Rome's tolerance of Jews to turn Rome against Christians, stating that Christianity was not a part of Judaism. That was the point at which it became a "separate" religion. However, it was never meant to be a new or different religion. It was simply universalized, and freed from certain constraints by Jesus. That did not go over well.

In what ways does religion affect American society?

Religion is what people turn to when they dont know what else to do. This is the case in many places all over the world and in America. People turn to religion to seek guidance, aid, and they seek what they can do at a time when they are down, when they have no where else to turn.
