The Kingdom of Israel was finally destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 BCE and many of the people who did not flee to Judah or Egypt deported, never to return. So, in the time of Jesus, there was no Kingdom of Israel and there had not been for over seven centuries. The land of the Israelites had become Samaria, the land of the Samarians, or Samaritans. Judea and Samaria were under Roman rule.
A:there is no suggestion that Jesus and his family had to flee Nazareth. In fact, Luke's Gospel says that the young family travelled peacefully from Nazareth to Jerusalem and back every year, for the Passover (Luke 2:41). It is in Matthew's Gospel that the young family had to flee, but this is a different story. We can see from the text that Bethlehem is their home town, and in fact we will see that they had probably never heard of Nazareth. After the birth of Jesus, they fled from Bethlehem to Egypt, for fear of King Herod. After Herod's death, they began the return journey to their home in Bethlehem but, being warned in a dream of further danger there, turned aside and travelled to Galilee where they settled in a city called Nazareth (Matthew 2:23).
