Jesus challenged the religious (perhaps they were pious, perhaps they weren't) leaders for three main reasons.

1) Jesus fundamentally disagreed with their interpretation of scripture. While the religious leaders focused on strict purity codes that separated them from outsiders, Jesus showed that the heart of scriptures is that people can be forgiven their past sins and must pursue new lives of selfless love towards God and others. (Matthew 5:16-48, 10:1-12; John 8:1-11)

2) Jesus cared for the common people, and he felt that their leaders were very poor leaders indeed. (e.g. Matthew 23)

3) The religious leaders did not believe in Jesus, and they were very jealous of his popularity. They therefore challenged him with difficult questions trying to trap him, and he replied by challenging them. (e.g. Mark 7; Matthew 22:15-46; John 8:12-59)
