He did not give His disciples "nick" names. What Jesus did was follow Old Testament precedent. A new name was given to persons who have spiritual adoption (Isa. 62:2), to Abraham (Gen. 17:5), Sarah (Gen. 17:15), Jacob (Gen. 32:28), Peter (Matthew 16:18), Paul (Acts 13:9). In order to understand the New Testament it is extremely helpful to understand the Old Testament.
Jesus changed Simons name to Peter, that means the rock. he said on this rock will I build my church on.
Jesus changed the name of his disciple Simon to Peter, that means the rock, the reason being Jesus told Simon you will be called peter the Rock, on you I will build my church.

community of disciples,
They were Andrew , James and John.
Because in the English Bible the disciples names are a translation of their Jewish name or possibly a transliteration of their Jewish names. For example Simon is English for the Jewish name Shimon and John is the English equivalent of Jochanan
Judas Iscariot had a last name.
The term 'disciples' means 'imitator' that is followers of Jesus Christ attempting to do things His way. The 'inner group' of disciples that were given to Jesus by His Father are called the 12 Apostles.
Beside the 12 disciples that followed Jesus there were many disciples mentioned, in fact too many to mention. Their names are found in almost all the books of the New Testament.
Their names were common names for the time period. Example: Jude, Judas, Jesus are all variations of the same name.
The name of the first four disciples were Andrew, Peter, James and john. These four were fishermen.
The names commonly associated with the 12 disciples in Western culture are translations or adaptations of their original Hebrew or Aramaic names. As Christianity spread throughout the Western world, these names were anglicized for ease of pronunciation and understanding by Western audiences.
