Mainly because men would follow and stay with him for threeand a half years, while ladies would have to look after their families. And it was not thought good in those days for ladies to follow men who were not married.

Some think that Jesus chose 4 men from three different areas of Judaism. Pharisees, Sadducees and Zealots. Essene was not represented in the 12 but John the Baptist was an orphan and raised by Essene monks.

Peter was Pharisee

Judas was Zealot.

You can get the idea of the sects by these two men. Zealots wanted the immediate overthrow of the Roman government while Pharisees wanted understanding.

Jesus choose simple fishermen, as they might willingly follow him , none of his followers were highly educated priests. all were fishermen and ordinary men.
