Seeing as no one can understand the mind of God, as said in Isaiah, we can only speculate. I personally believe that Jesus wished to show that he can work through anyone, no matter how great their sin, as long as they come to saving knowledge in Him. Jesus even chose a tax collecter, Matthew, even though tax collecters were among the most hated men among all of Israel. Why Jesus chose these men will remain unknown until someone asks Him themselves.
