John 10: 22 tells us that Jesus was in Jerusalem in December for the "Feast of Dedication" also called the "Feast of Lights". This festival celebrated the Israelite victory over the Syrian leader Antiochus Epiphanes about 166 B.C. This Holiday is also known as Hanukkah and is celebrated very close to our Christmas. Some people get this man, Antiochus Epiphanes, confused with the Antichrist. The two are similar but different and Epiphanes is well in the past.
As to why Jesus' primary reason for being there I don't know unless He wanted to celebrate that Holiday and give more witness to Himself.

A:Scholars note that in the synoptic gospels all the events of Jesus' mission could have taken place within the space of a few weeks, in addition to which his first reported visit to Jerusalem for the annual Passover celebration was at the time of his crucifixion. The story of Jesus entering Jerusalem to the tumultuous welcome of the multitude suggests that this was his first visit since beginning his public mission, as do the reactions of Jesus and the apostles to what they observed in Jerusalem. On this evidence, there is good reason to suggest that Jesus' mission was completed in less than one year.On the other hand, John's Gospel makes it clear that, during his mission, Jesus visited Jerusalem three times for the annual Passover celebration. In this gospel account, Jesus certainly took three years to train his disciples.
