At the Monterey Pop Festival, on Sunday, June 18, 1967, Hendrix played his final set, including "Wild Thing". He then set fire to his Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, and smashed it. Speculation was that he was inspired by the guitar-breaking in performances by The Who's Pete Townshend.

(see related link)

The first time Hendrix set his guitar on fire was March 31, 1967 at the London Astoria Club but the most famous and remembered instance is the Monterey Pop festival.

Bobby Womack, fellow guitarist on tour with Cooke/Wilson in early 60s, claims that the first time Hendrix set his guitar ablaze was actually in 1964 but no photographic evidence exists to back it up.

When and Where did Hendrix burn his guitar?

Original Answer: The guitar was bought by Daniel Boucher, a U.S. collector and dealer based in Boston. ^^ incorrect, Boucher bought the FIRST guitar Jimi lit on fire -- which happened in London before coming back to America and playing the monterey pop festival. The famous guitar played and destroyed at the monterey pop festival is on display in a Jimi Hendrix exhibit at the "Experience Music Project" museum in Seattle, Washington.
