The majority did not return to Israel (judea). Their places of exile were relatively comfortable at the time, while conditions in Judea were very difficult as can be seen from the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.
Jodi is either a form of Joseph, or of Judith. Joseph means 'he will add' and Judith means 'she from Judea'. Believe which you like.

Joseph A. Nidue has written: 'Return from the unknown'
The birth place of St. Joseph is not known but we do know he lived in Nazareth . However, we do not know if that was his town of birth.
A:In Mathew's nativity account, Joseph and Mary fled from their home in Bethlehem to Egypt out of fear of King Herod, who sought to kill Jesus. The death of Herod, presumably some years later, allowed them to commence the return journey back to Bethlehem. However, they never got to Bethlehem because Joseph was warned in a dream that Archelaus, the new ruler of Judea, posed a new threat. Instead they turned aside and travelled to Galilee, where they settled in a town called Nazareth.
----------------------- Luke's Gospel gives the home of Mary and Joseph as Nazareth. Matthew's Gospel suggests that their home was in Bethlehem before the flight to Egypt, but after their return to Judea, they turned aside and moved to Nazareth, out of the fear of King Herod's son.
A:The account of Joseph fleeing to Egypt, then returning after the death of King Herod, is in Matthew's Gospel only. In Luke's Gospel, Joseph had already returned home to Nazareth in Galilee, shortly after the death of Jesus. In Matthew, Bethlehem was Joseph's home town, so Joseph already had a house (Matthew 2:11) to which they could return. However, on the way back he heard that Herod's son Archelaus now ruled in Judea, and he dreamt that God warned him not to return to Bethlehem in Judea. He turned aside and travelled to Galilee (ruled by Herod Antipas) and settled in a city called Nazareth, to fulfil a prophecy that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.Scholars have been unable to identify a prophecy that linked Jesus with being called a Nazarene. However, Mark's Gospel does identify Jesus with Nazareth, and since Matthew was based substantially on Mark, it was important that Matthew's nativity story have Jesus spend his later childhood there. Note that many scholars say that neither nativity story, in Matthew or Luke, is historically true.
