In Luke's Gospel, Joseph had already returned home to Nazareth in Galilee, shortly after the death of Jesus.In Matthew, Bethlehem was Joseph's home town, so Joseph already had a house (Matthew 2:11) to which they could return. However, on the way back he heard that Herod's son Archelaus now ruled in Judea, and he dreamt that God warned him not to return to Bethlehem in Judea. He turned aside and travelled to Galilee (ruled by Herod Antipas) and settled in a city called Nazareth, to fulfil a prophecy that Jesus would be called a Nazarene.Scholars have been unable to identify a prophecy that linked Jesus with being called a Nazarene. However, Mark's Gospel does identify Jesus with Nazareth, and since Matthew was based substantially on Mark, it was important that Matthew's nativity story have Jesus spend his later childhood there. Note that many scholars say that neither nativity story, in Matthew or Luke, is historically true.
