Joseph had four options. Stoning, divorce with public humiliation, writing a certificate of divorce with a couple witnesses, or continue with the marriage contract.

Capital punishment was not allowed by the Romans just for the violation of a Jewish crime and marriage after suspicion of adultery would have meant Joseph accepting the dishonor and shame of a "defiled wife"--which eventually he did do.

Joseph originally chose the less severe of the two forms of divorce out of compassion for Mary, even though it could have meant forfeiting the financial remuneration he could have received.

Joseph wished to divorce Mary because he thought she had been unfaithful and become pregnant by another man. However, he later had a dream in which an angel told him that Mary's pregnancy was a result of the Holy Spirit, and he decided to stay with her.

Read the first chapters of the books of Matthew and Luke, understanding that those testaments (Matthew, Mark and Luke) all provide a different perspective of Jesus Christ.

  1. Matthew being the view of Christ the King as inherited from the house of David via Joseph
  2. Mark being the view of Jesus Christ as flesh mankind, which starts with Jesus being a man in his thirties
  3. Luke being the view of Christ the High Priest as inherited from the tribe of Levi of the Daughters of Aaron (Mary)

Joseph was told about Mary's condition by the angel of the Lord.

Matthew 1

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The prophecy being fulfilled which is referenced in verse 22, is Isaiah 7 verse 14... This is very important as those of the temple at that time never accepted Jesus Christ as Immanuel, and still do not accept him as such even until this very day, Neither the Jews nor the Muslims accept Jesus Christ as Immanuel, and even some proclaiming to be Christians do not accept the same. This is important as Satan shall stand in the temple in Jerusalem proclaiming himself to be "God with us" aka Immanuel - (see 2 Thessalonians 2).

When Mary was pregnant Joseph was allowed by what Jewish law?

Joseph was going to break the engagement - in Jewish law, engagement was as binding as a marriage - and he was intending to do this privately rather than making a public spectacle of Mary. An angel intervened and this action was never taken.Joseph wanted to break the engagement quietly. When Mary became pregnant Joseph then wanted to quietly divorce her as it was allowed by Jewish law.Joseph had the right to divorce Mary under Jewish Law, since she became pregnant prior to their marriage.Joseph was going to divorce Mary. Think about it... In those time you couldn't have sex with your wife until a year has passed and suddenly Mary becomespregnant saying it is the Holy Spirit who has conceived her. Many people wouldbelieve that she was lying and she had cheated on Joseph but that was nottrue. Joseph did not leave her for the angel came to him in the dream and toldhim everything and u know what happens after that.===================================I'm not at all knowledgeable in this department, so I don't want to appear as ifI intend to get involved, but will somebody please explain to me that businessabout "In those time you couldn't have sex with your wife until a year has passed" ?Where in the world does that come from ? Certainly not from any Jewish world, which I understand was the environment of the subject under discussion.I was told all of this but it seems that it was actually Mary got pregnant before she was married which is fornication and he was going to well... 'divorce' her...i checked all of this okay.========================That's different.Thank you.
