King William the I (William the conqueror) didn't build all his castles out of stone. In fact, most of the castles he built were made out of wood. These wooden castles were called Motte and Bailey castles. The castles that hedid build out of stone were called Stone Keep Castles (Stone Castles). King William built the Stone Keep Castles out of stone because stone is stronger than wood, doesn't rot within a few years and doesn't burn easily.

∙ 12y agoBecause there were lots of forests in England at the time, and since (after The Battle of Hastings) the Normans needed quick defences, building castles out of timber and earth was the easiest and quickest option. Mainly these castles were called Motte and Bailey castles, and it is believed that as many as 1000 of these castles were built. However, these castles were not built to last and quickly rotted, or sometimes were burnt down.
Basically, because they were quick and easy to build and proved effective! :)
