She may have been Rh - , in the old days women with this blood condition had one, or at the most two, children. This was the case in my great-grandmother's life. Laura also developed Diabetes, and Rose was 9 lbs at birth, pointing to gestational Diabetes perhaps? And then, Almanzo had that terrible stroke, Laura never conceived (that we know of) after that; perhaps he became somewhat impotent. And Laura had bad nutrition all the years she was growing up; that couldn't have helped.

Laura Ingalls Wilder only had one child, Rose Wilder Lane, because she experienced several challenges during childbirth, which may have prevented her from having more children. Additionally, Rose was a demanding child who required a lot of attention and care, which could have been a factor in Laura's decision to have only one child.
