Vladimir Lenin was a communist and an admirer of the political and economical ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. As such, he believed that private property had to ultimately be taken over by the State. This would be one of the first steps to remodel the world into a communist one. With that said, it was clear to him and his followers that landowners and capitalists were exploiters of the people and were enemies to be destroyed.
The rich and powerful dislike Communism, as a classless society would mean the end of their privileges.

The cause of imperialism, according to Lenin and Hobson is capitalism. Hobson stated that finance could manipulate events in order to gain a profit, that may or may not benefit the nation. The need for imperialism grew as these capitalists needed to defend the investments in other countries, specifically the scramble for Africa. Lenin developed Hobson's ideas into what is called socialism stating that the dividing up of the resources to monopolies from other countries would lead to war as well as an end to capitalism.

It appears that Lenin changed his mind about the nationalization of small peasant farms in 1907 from his first writings on the subject in 1903. At that time Lenin proposed that local democratic bodies would be in charge of small farms and under that system, peasants could vote on any concerns. In 1907, however, Lenin changed his mind. He was opposed to small scale peasant farm development in that large scale collectives would be more efficient. It has been speculated that Lenin's change of mind was also based on the belief that such groups of landowners might form a landed class opposed to socialism.
Lenin and other Russian revolutionaries believed that the working classes and the common soldiers of the WW 1 powers would rise in revolt against their rulers. Lenin was disappointed this did not happen but in 1916 came to the conclusion as to why his beliefs were "outdated", in a manner of speaking. Lenin believed that the wealth of the capitalists had trickled down to various parts of the working man's world. He saw chauvinism and opportunism develop among the workers that financially benefited them. They became a corrupting force among the workers and won them over to the capitalist side.
