He made up a pair, decided to wear them to the meeting to sign a contract and realized in his excitement that the had forgotten to finish the sewing on the pockets. He didn't have time to finish sewing, and knew he needed a pocket, if for nothing else than to put the contract in, so he finished the pocket with rivets. The money men liked it and you know the rest of the story.
He wanted sturdy clothing that would not rip or tear easily for gold miners to wear.
