Jefferson chose his personal secretary, and neighbor Meriwether Lewis, to lead the exploration of the new US territory. When he needed a partner, however, to help his expedition, Lewis agreed to have William Clark to share the leadership of the exploration of the Louisiana Territory. Sharing the command of the mission, was at the time, a sign of humbleness and Lewis' intelligence to share the duties was a correct one. Therefore, history records that the Lewis and Clark expedition explored the Louisiana Purchase.
