He was highly obsessed with receiving attention and he got the adoration from countless fans (all women) after he came out with his books. It is apparent throughout both the movies and the novels that Lockhart isn't proficient in most any type of spell and seemed to not be a smart man all around. He uses the incorrect incantation on Harry's broken arm during the Quidditch game and ends up vanishing all the bones and after the release of the Cornish pixies he realized he did not know the correct incantation to get the situation under control. Considering the personality of Gilderoy Lockchart it would be safe to assume that he wrote his books for the fame and/or money it would bring him.
