In addition to being a master performer, Louis Armstrong was a gifted composer, and he wrote more than fifty songs, many of which have become jazz standards (e.g., "Gully Low Blues," "Potato Head Blues," and "Swing That Music"). Louis also collaborated with other musicians, such as Joe "King" Oliver, and his second wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, and in some cases it's not always clear if the song was a collaboration or not. Sometimes Louis allowed a collaborator to take the full credit for the song, making it harder to determine who actually wrote it. Louis also recorded arrangements of other people's songs, as well as songs written especially for him, such as "What a Wonderful World."
I believe it's because he wasn't a real fan of indie rock, and besides there's not a lot of cornet in it anyway. The odd Trumpet does show up, but it wasn't really his thing. I think I read somewhere about a proto-metal band that had tried to hire him, but as guitar amplifiers had yet to really exist, the band kinda sucked. Just a lot of yelling and maybe some banjo and drums. Louis wasn't a fan. Maybe if the Marshall woulda been invented then the band woulda been better and Satchmo would have maybe played that instead. I think being in New Orleans, he figured this new jass music might get him a few gigs if he could stomach his way through it. I mean really, why would anyone want to play jazz, you know? Jeez.
First and foremost he was a trumpet player and sang with his songs as part of his act.
