The third estate wanted to overtrow the monarchy (thus, Louis XVI as their king), and since he was an execellent king, he was also a weak one. He did not resist. The only thing he did do, was try to flee the country, but he was captured.

I know that the increase in radicalism was due to the unfair treatment of the Third Estate (aka the low classes, the poor people). King Louis XVI taxed them heavily and granted them no civil liberties, while the clergy and nobles got lots of privileges. I think that the conservatives tried to resist the rebellion, but I'm not completly sure. I don't know what the moderates did.
