The French monarch in 1789 was King Louis XVI. He became King of France in 1774.
To rid France of all symbols of the monarchy.

His older brother Louis-Joseph was actually the Dauphin of France and the heir. But he sadly perished on June 4, 1789 from tuberculosis at age 7. Louis-Charles became the Dauphin of France at age 4 after his brother's death. After the execution of his father on January 1793 he was seen by Royalists to be the next king of France.
He chose to remain in France and tough it out until the Queen convinced him that it was time to make their escape (Get out of Dodge.)

the guillotine was used for the execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette outside in the courtyard of the Louvre. Here they were beheaded publicly for all the people of France to see. That is the only place i know of where they executed people in this manner.
Louis XVI was executed by guillotine in 1793 during the French Revolution for treason against the state. He was accused of conspiring with foreign powers and counter-revolutionary factions to overthrow the French Republic and restore the monarchy. His execution marked the end of the Bourbon monarchy in France.
Marie Antoinette was executed by guillotine on October 16, 1793. She was the wife of King Louis XVI of France. Her execution was nine months after her husband's execution during the French Revolution.
He had been imprisoned in the Tower for several months prior to his execution.

Louis XIV was not executed. It was his great-grandson, Louis XVI, who was executed by guillotine in 1793.
