It happened between Pandavas and Kauravas. To protect Dharma and truth.

THE CAUSE OF MAHABHARATA:

Hindus believe that Mahabharata is a historical event. However, the war may be symbolic.

To understand the symbolism involved, we must know about the semi voluntary force, which Vishnu represents.

THE SEMI VOLUNTARY FORCE:

This force produces wave like ups and downs in our life and makes life flexible like water, which is the reason why Vishnu has the color of water i.e. blue.

It force has two halves. The positive half gives satisfaction and the negative half forces us to achieve more. The Positive and Negative attitudes oppose extreme changes in our life.

SEMI VOLUNTARY FORCE AND MAHABHARATA:

1. Negative attitude - Bhishma

2. Positive Self - Kauravas

3. Negative Self - Pandavas

4. Positive attitude - Krishna

THE PATTERN IN MAHABHARATA:

1. Pandavas and Kauravas are cousins and they symbolize two parts of the semi voluntary force.

2. Mahabharata is a symbolic battle between satisfaction and the urge to achieve, in which the urge to achieve defeats satisfaction.

3. If we can get rid of our negative attitude, Positive and negative self, we would have just the positive attitude. This would transform the status quo maintaining Vishnu into Krishna, who symbolizes Positive attitude. This is what exactly happens in Mahabharata. Thus, Mahabharata is also the battle in which Vishnu transforms into Krishna.
