Marie Curie was commonly referred to as "Madame Curie" during her lifetime as a sign of respect for her achievements in science. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields (Physics and Chemistry). The title "Madame" was used as a form of address for married women in French-speaking cultures, indicating her status and recognition for her work.
Maria Skłodowska (her name at the time) began to study at the University of Paris (of which the Sorbonne is one of its colleges) in late 1891. There she met Pierre Curie, married him a secular ceremony, made several important discoveries, and finally received her doctorate from that institution in 1903 June.
