African Americans were already free and had been when Martin Luther King made his political debut. He wanted equality for all people. Men, women, black, white, poor and rich.

He wanted black people to have the same rights: vote, go into restaurants of their choosing, share water fountains and public restrooms, stay in hotels, go to local schools, buy homes of their choice in the neighborhood of their choice, be able to be treated at any hospital and so on. In his time, there were many, many places where this was not possible.
