Basically it was to set her up so that when she was accused they had evidence that she couldn't explain.
It's important because it sets up Elizabeth, John proctor's wife. Abigail planted the needle, to "set-up" Elizabeth so she's accused and killed. But instead John Proctor dies at the end not Elizabeth Proctor
The needle in The Poppet represents voodoo, which, to the people of Salem is related directly to witchcraft and punishable by the court. Elizabeth is arrested for possessing the poppet for this reason.
Mary Warren played the role of John and Elizabeth's maid after Abigail Williams, and she is forced to confess her lying to the Court all along for trying to frame Elizabeth by leaving a poppet in the Proctor household. She is easily manipulated and frightened as the girls begin to imitate her whilst she is asked by Parris to faint as she and the girls did in the beginning. But being struck with fear, Mary isn't able to faint. In the end of Act three, she turns on John Proctor by calling him the Devils man, and announcing that Proctor would hang her is his wife, Elizabeth, hangs for being accused of a witch.
John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, and Giles Corey are the main nonconformists in The Crucible. Reverend John Hale, Ezekiel Cheever, Reverend Samuel Parris, Betty Parris, Mary Warren, Thomas Putnam, and Ann Putnam are the conformists.

Elizabeth gets arrested in the Crucible in Act two because Abigail runs into court with a needle stabbed into her stomach. She claims that Elizabeth's spirit did this, so they go such the proctors house for a poppet (rag doll), which represents Abigail. when they find the poppet there is a needle stuck in its stomach so that is enough evidence to get Elizabeth arrested. (that poppet was made by Mary Warren, their slave, and was given to Elizabeth the day before.

In "The Crucible," Abigail claims that Elizabeth Proctor has a doll which she used to stick pins in to cause her pain. She claims the doll has a needle in its stomach in the exact location that a needle appeared in her own stomach. In truth, Mary Warren gave Elizabeth the doll and Abigail stuck a pin in her own stomach, all to set up Elizabeth.
Cheever is looking for a poppet because Abigail was "stabbed by Elizabeth's spirit." The poppet they find had a needle in the same place Abigail got stabbed. Mary had made the doll in court in front of Abigail, who saw the needle being placed. Coincidence? I think not.
