because she wanted to wrap Jesus in spices and ointments.

Answer:

It wasn't until the "first day of the week," our "Sunday," that they were able to perform the spice and ointment custom.

They had to wait until the "two Sabbaths" that week had passed. Jesus was murdered on the Passover, which fell on our "Wednesday" that week. That means that the Jews, to please God according to the law, had to have Him buried before sundown, which was the preparation for the next day, our "Thursaday," which was the first day of Unleavened Bread, a commanded feast day, a High Day [annual] Sabbath, that immediately follows "Passover," the day before the Feast Day.

"...the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord's Passover. And on the fifteenthday of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread unto the Lord: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein." (Lev.23:5-8)

After they rested on our "Thursday," the feast day, they would have had to wait until our "Friday" during the day for the markets to open so they could purchase the spices and ointments they needed. The remainder of "Friday" was spent preparing everything.

Then they rested from our "Friday" sundown, through our "Saturday" daytime, the weekly Sabbath.

Sundown on our "Saturday night" was the first part of their "first day of the week"... but they had to wait until daylight to be able to see what they had to do... the grisly task they had ahead of them. So, they timed their arrival so that the first rays of the sun appeared on that first day of the week, our "Sunday."

It was the first real opportunity they had to do it.

But, Jesus was already "risen" by then. He had risen at the end of the weekly Sabbath, our "Saturday," just before the sun went down at the same time of day He had been buried, three days and three nights earlier.

He was hastily buried on our "Wednesday" just before sundown, according to the law, so that the bodies weren't hanging on the trees through the sabbaths (Gal.3:13).

"...His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled..." (Deut.21:23).

"The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,)..." (John 19:31). "High Day" sabbaths are the "yearly" ones, not the weekly sabbath.

Therefore, our "Wednesday night, Thursday night and Friday night" - was "three nights."

Our "Thursday day, Friday day and Saturdayday" - was "three days."

And Jesus was then raised on the "third day"... that "Saturday evening" toward sundown, the same time of day that He had been buried.

And the women found the tomb empty. Jesus wasn't just then, "rising." He "IS RISEN."

The exact amount of time Jesus said He would be buried.
