His father was very strict with his kids, but he would also cheat on his wife, Katherine who Michael was very close with. He loved his mother very much, and it hurt him to see his father treat her like that. Joseph also had a love child with the woman he cheated with. Plus, Joseph never let Michael have a real childhood because he was always working. Joseph even refused to let his kids call him "dad". They had to refer to him as "Joe" or "Joseph". All this adds up to why they didn't have a good relationship.
