Answer:

It was a "vision" whereby Jesus fulfilled a promise He'd made to His disciples about a week earlier:

"...There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in His Kingdom." (Matt.16:28)

"...after six days..." (Matt.17:1) -- Jesus took Peter, James and John into the mountain for them to see Him as He would appear in the Kingdom of God... and how He will appear in the clouds when He returns to earth with the Kingdom of God.

"...Jesus... was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light [see also, Revelation 1:13-16]. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias [Elijah] talking with Him...

"...and when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man..." (Matt.17:1-9).

As Jesus promised... some of His disciples got a glimpse of the Kingdom of God as it would be, along with Jesus' appearance as He is described today.

All the other saints named in The Bible shall be in the Kingdom, also. Jesus' three disciples saw Moses and Elijah. There was no way they could have known who they were, except it had to be revealed to them in the vision.

AnswerActually what the above answer does not recognise is the deep symbolic nature of Moses and Elijah as the two who appeared as opposed to anyone else. It wasn't just a glimpse of the Kingdom of God. It was much more significant than even that.

To the Jew, their spiritual lives were controlled by the Levitical Law and the prophesies surrounding both Jewish life and the coming of the Messiah. To the Jews, the Law-giver was Moses, as he was the agent by which the ten commandments came to the people, and the rest of the Levitical Law. To the Jews, the greatest prophet was Elijah, both from his work as a prophet and man of God, but also because of theJewish belief that he was assumed into heaven on a 'firery chariot' instead of dying a natural death.

Thus, to Peter, James and John, who witnessed the Transfiguration, Jesus was able to summon the representaties of the Law and the Prophets, and thus he placed himself firmly above them. His glorification was also a mark of his superiority to even the Law and the Prophets.

Jesus himself mentions the Law and the Prophets several times (eg Matt 5:17, 22:40, Luke 24:44 and many other references.) and even his great command to love one another, he says, stems from the Law and the Prophets. Thus the appearance of Moses and Elijah signified not only Jesus' superiority over the old ways of the Law and Prophets, not only the dawn of a new Messianiic age, but also his mission, not to condemn the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfil it as God wanted rather than as the Jews skewed it to meet their own ends.

A:Elijah and Moses were at the Transfiguration to show their approval of the mission of Jesus and point to him as their true successor. The baptism of Jesus, his forty days in the wilderness, the voices of God from heaven and the appearance of Moses and Elijah at the Transfiguration all point to this, reinforcing the same message through the chiastic structure of Mark, the gospel where these accounts first appear. A chiastic structure is a circular structure in which one set of events is mirrored by a second set in order to emphasise and reinforce the message of each event.

Mark 1:13 tells of Jesus going into the wilderness for forty days, ministered by angels just as Elijah was ministered by an angel and in the wilderness forty days (1 Kings 19:5-7). There is no actual suggestion in Mark that Jesus fasted for this time, but those familiar with the story of Elijah are likely to have assumed he did do so. This brings into play another allusion, to Moses when (Exodus 34:28) he fasted for 40 days while he wrote the words of the Ten Commandments on tablets. These allusions will reinforce the message of the appearance of both Elijah and Moses at the Transfiguration of Jesus.

Jesus took Peter, James and John up into a high mountain, where his appearance changed, and they saw him talking to two strangers. Somehow, the disciples knew without question that the strangers talking to Jesus were Moses and Elijah.

Read literally, the sole reason for this journey was to let the three disciples see Jesus talking to Moses and Elijah, yet they learnt nothing from the experience and were even instructed to tell no one. It is indeed hard to imagine why Jesus would have given the three disciples this divine experience yet instruct them not to tell of it, when to do so would have helped spread the message of Jesus - just as the gospel account of the Transfiguration now helps spread the message of Jesus. Perhaps the reason the gospel story says that Jesus told the disciples to say nothing, is that the Transfiguration was unknown before the gospel was written.

There was no apparent divine purpose to the Transfiguration and it seems not to have benefitted the disciples, so we need to look elsewhere for the meaning of the Transfiguration. Mark's Gospel contains a sophisticated parallel structure, a sequence in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another set of events that mirrors the first. As a literary device, the Transfiguration of Jesus could have been for the benefit of the intended audience of the gospel, providing emphasis and developing the themes of Jesus as the Son of God and of fulfilling the mission of Elijah and Moses. We see, in the framework, parallel structure of Mark's Gospel that the themes of the Transfiguration form pairs with matching themes of Jesus' baptism and forty days in the wilderness:A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)

B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)

To understand the significance of the appearance of Elijah and Moses at the transfiguration, we must first look at the framework structure of Mark's Gospel, the earliest New Testament gospel to be written. Mark was based around a parallel structure, a literary technique used in ancient times to add emphasis or develop themes not otherwise apparent:

A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)

B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)

C . The voice of God from heaven, "Thou art my beloved son" (1:11)

D . The forty days in the wilderness as an allusion to Elijah and Moses (1:13)

E . The people were astonished at what Jesus taught (1:22)

F . Jesus casts out an unclean spirit (1:23-26)

G . Pharisees took counsel with the Herodians how they might destroy Jesus (3:6)

H . Demons, whenever they see Jesus, fall down and say that he is the Son of God.

-- Jesus commands that they tell no one of this (3:11-12)

I .. Jesus calls the 12 disciples (3:13-19)

K . Jesus rebukes the wind (4:36-41)

L . The demoniac, wearing no clothes (5:15), cries out that Jesus not torment him and Jesus sends out the demons (5:1-20)

-- Where he was brought up

N . The people misunderstand Jesus and he can do no mighty work (6:2-6)

O . Jesus sends out the disciples and curses those who will not receive them (6:7-11)

Here we see that the transfiguration occurs at event D' in the structure, and the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness is the matching event D in this structure.

In Mark 1:13, the story of Jesus going into the wilderness, where he was ministered by angels is an allusion to Elijah (1 Kings 19:5-7) who was ministered by an angel and in the wilderness forty days. There is no actual suggestion that Jesus fasted for this time, but those familiar with the story of Elijah are likely to have assumed he did do so, and this is made explicit in Matthew and Luke. This brings into play another allusion, to Moses when (Exodus 34:28) he fasted for 40 days while he wrote the words of the Ten Commandments on tablets. This easily overlooked allusion neatly mirrors the Transfiguration, which confirms and emphasises the earlier allusions to Elijah and Moses.

Why did moses and elija appear on the mountain with Jesus?

Moses was a central character in the early life of Israel as a nation. The people revered him even after his death. Elijah was one of the greatest prophets of the Bible. The next thing that happened on the Mount of Transfiguration was God speaking out of the cloud, " This is my beloved Son, hear him". That means they were to follow what Jesus taught now and what is in the Bible rather than what Moses and Elijah had said before.

What two people from the Old Testament appeared with Jesus on a mountain?

AnswerJesus took Peter, James and John up into a high mountain, where his appearance changed, and they saw him talking to Moses and Elijah. It is reported that over 90 per cent of scholars say that the historical events ascribed to Moses never occurred, and it is therefore most unlikely that Moses ever existed. Similarly, it is quite improbable that Elijah ever existed. Yet, somehow, the disciples knew without question that the strangers talking to Jesus were Moses and Elijah.
