I guess you didn't read the book only the title. He doesn't think the world is flat ( as in the shape of the world). His thesis is that the world is flattened because of the computer and new technology. He states that a person can sit in a cave in the outer regions of the world and have people do political acts. This has never happened in the history of the world. Before it took a nation to attack people and to wage war and now individuals can do what nations use to do. Thus, the world is flattened.
No one ever discovered that the world was flat because it is not flat. The world is round. They just assumed it was flat because it seems flat.

In my opinion, I think Jane and Bingley can be considered the "flat characters" in Pride and Prejudice. They are just too nice and fits too perfectly into the mould of how the society expects people to behave. Amiable, polite, good-willed, sociable and all the goods of people. Therefore this may make their character to appear too dull and flat.
In "Winter Dreams" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, two flat characters are Irene Scheerer and Mr. Sandwood. Irene is depicted as a typical society girl without much complexity or depth, while Mr. Sandwood is portrayed as a conventional businessman without much character development or insight into his inner world.
