Engineers researching thin-film coatings for spacecraft in the late '80's - early '90's at NASA's Lewis Research Centerdeveloped a system of depositing Diamond-like Carbon (DLC)coatings on aerospace systems . The process, using ion deposition, adds DLC to thin substrates, giving them maximum protection at significant cost savings.Air Products and Chemicals, Inc, received a license to the NASA patent for DLC. This led to the creation of the DLC spinoff technology company Diamonex.Diamonex further developed the process into DiamondHard, which was eventually used as the scratch-resistant coating on Ray-Ban Survivor sunglasses. DLC and other scratch resistant coatings are used on camera lenses and CD/DVD/BD disks.
