The many native American tribes had through the ages regularly warred with each other and were always in a situation where they were friendly with some neighbors and not so friendly with other neighboring tribes. Before finally realizing that the colonists were out to subject them all, they thought of the well-armed colonists as sometimes useful allies in settling power struggles of their own.

The French colonies were less of a threat than British colonizers. The French had mostly small outposts of trappers and traders. The British colonies had exploded in population since their establishment and were clearly looking to expand into lands that the Native Americans currently occupied. The style of British colonies did not have any place for Native Americans.

This was clear when the British commander in charge of fighting the French, General Braddock, was asked by Shingas (a local leader of the Delaware Indians) whether the tribes who allied with Britain would be allowed to live and trade with the English and have land of their own. General Braddock replied that "No Savage Should Inherit the Land"

As Howard Zinn explains the situation, Indians viewed the French as temporary settlers as opposed to the British, who came to America to claim land from natives. The natives viewed French as less threatening, and the majority fought for France, with the exception of some tribes.

The English settlers treated the Native American tribes with disrespect and took their land. They killed as many as they could in as many ways as they could. While the French had always treated the Natives they met with respect and many of the French traders lived/married into various tribes through the years. The French had relationships and were trading partners with the Native Americans as compared to the English. It is only natural the tribes fought with the French rather than the English.
