Armstrong flew with Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11. Armstrong and Aldring landed on the moon on the afternooon ofJuly 20, 1969.They got there by being the best test pilots in the military and theyhad PHD's. Those were the minimum requirements to be a NASA astronaut. After being selected as astronauts, all 3 men were trained to flythe Gemini spacecraft. Armstrong flew on Gemini 8, Collins flew on Gemini 10 and Aldrin flew on Gemini 12. After that, all 3 were assigned to NASA's Apollo program, where they learned to fly the Apollo spacecraft, the Lunar Module, andthe ApolloSaturn V booster.
