I'm not sure he ever officially stopped. Over the years, he has sporadically played concerts in Nashville, but his management determines where he will perform; these days, he usually focuses on the east coast and the west coast. It may be because he does not draw a large enough audience in Nashville, as opposed to, for example, Los Angeles or New York City. But if you are a fan of his from Nashville, by all means, contact his management and ask if he has any plans to tour in your area. He is currently represented by the William Morris Agency world-wide, and his wife (Katie McNeil Diamond), along with her staff, handle his day-to-day management.

It's very unlikely, and may be another of those old myths that have no facts to support them. (I do not find any reports in local newspapers of any ban of Neil Diamond.) More likely, because Nashville is known as the home of country music, many pop and top-40 stars do not sell a lot of concert tickets there; so managers tend to book their artists into cities where they can be the most successful. Neil Diamond has a good relationship with a number of Nashville musicians, and he even did an album of songs written by country and pop stars-- in fact, he rented a house in Nashville in the early 1990s to be closer to the music scene there.
