They were guided by the the Christian tenets of governing of their founder William Penn. Some states were determined to exterminate th Native Americans but Penn was not.

Under William Penn's leadershio dealings with and treaties involving Native Amerticans were generally honorable and fair bargains. Things changed when he died.
