They recognized that Jesus was the son of God.
Jn 1:43-51On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him,"Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, "We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!"
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!"
Answer/
Philip and Nathanael, being well versed in the books of the prophets, found that the parables and riddles and sometimes direct meanings written concerning the coming of the Messiah, were expressed in Jesus of Nazareth - (where he had been brought up) - Luke 4:16.
Nathanael in John 1:45 - 46, challenged Philip on the veracity of Jesus of Nazareth being the Messiah, due to Micah prophesying that the Messiah was to come forth from Bethlehem - Micah 5:2. Philip replied to Nathanael 'come and see'.
Jesus met Nathanael and imparted to him information that only 'one from of old, from everlasting.', (Micah 5:2) would know about Nathanael, who then exclaimed, 'Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel!' - John 1:49.
Previously Jesus had said to Nathanael, 'Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!' Nathanael being wise in the content of the books of Moses, knew Exodus 21:14 which says that one 'should not come upon his neighbour and slay him with guile', as one who hides in a tree and descends upon a passerby.
Nathanael asked Jesus in what respect did this concern him, whereupon Jesus replied that he had seen him, ' "under the fig tree" ', contrary to with guile hiding in the fig tree, and he perceived that Jesus knew that on a previous occasion he had been hidden in a fig tree.
That previous occasion was during the time when the children were about to be slain by Herod, and - 'The mother of Nathanael took him and set him up upon a fig tree, and she covered him with the leaves thereof.' Ref: The History of the Blessed Mary.
If found out that the edict of Herod had not been carried out, Nathanael and his mother were under threat of death and so only she and him or perhaps trusted brethren knew of the matter, and why Nathanael knew that Jesus was - 'one from of old, from everlasting' - the Messiah, of whom he could not refute, which served to confirm both him and Philip as followers of Jesus Christ.
they were fishermen when Jesus called them. They inmediatley knew he was the Messiah.

Simon Peter followed Jesus because Jesus called him to be his disciple, and Peter was drawn to Jesus' teachings and presence.
