He did not want to become pope.. He went to the august 1978 Conclave, stating that he was not at all fit to become pope and was elected to his own surpise.. He hesitated quite some time before uttering the traditional "Accepto", which is Latin for "I accept".

It is doubtful that any cardinal truly wants to become Pope. Most priests, bishops and cardinals wish to perform their duties in their own communities as they feel best fulfills the mission of the Church, not be swarmed by the enormous responsibilities and scrutinies of the office of the Bishop of Rome. The College of Cardinals prays to and relies upon the Holy Spirit to guide them in their selection of the new pontiff. The selection of a new pope is meant to be not of human choosing, but that of God himself.
