Obama ran an effective campaign based on the message of hope for change. He is an excellent speaker with a lot of energy and personality on the stump. He had the benefit of a Republican incumbent who had become unpopular in his second term-- many people were ready for a change. He also had the benefit of a weak opponent, a tired old senator who chose a running mate whose only relevant experience was as governor of Alaska. Obama's mixed race helped him get the black and Hispanic vote.
